Reflection from Kendall Mallette, Director of Mission Integration
A Time for Accountability
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said it best yesterday in a communication from her office entitled A Time for Accountability when she stated that “We failed Adam (Toledo). I know we must take this terrible moment and use it to fuel our commitment to police accountability and transparency, and to investing in young people in our Black and Brown communities who for too long haven’t been supported by their government…This is our mission…”
In a video featuring alum Avonlea Hong ’20 in the December 7, 2020 edition of With Mission in Mind entitled Are We Developing Moral Rebels?, our community was challenged to think about our own mission and listen as she recounts some of her highlights and lowlights as a student at FXW. And through her testimonial, it was our hope to see and hear every FXW student, family and staff member who doesn’t fit our community’s majority via their ability, age, citizenship, ethnicity, faith, gender, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class and more. In our efforts to foster an inclusive Community of Belonging, we recognize that we must continue to Do More by intentionally and systemically building an infrastructure that keeps history from repeating itself and prepares all students for success.
So how does an FXW education prepare students for success, especially amid the avalanche of hate crimes affecting America’s Black and Brown communities? Join us for a virtual panel on April 29 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. highlighting the experiences of a cross-section of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage FXW students and alumni exploring how their FXW foundation helped them achieve success in high school, college, and beyond. This event will be hosted by FXW’s very own Grade 2 teacher Hannah Kim who will address everything from the Model Minority Myth to current new stories surrounding the AAPI community.
