Basketball Camp
The first two weeks of camp will be basketball only, an activity founded by NBA Referee and former FXW Dad James Capers. Also helping with the program are Chicago’s own Michael Horton and Eric Minor. These experienced hoopsters will help your daughter’s or son’s game no matter what their skill level. These camps are an incredible opportunity that only FXW can offer!
Golf & Tennis Camps
3-Point Athletics tennis and golf instructors will host afternoon camps beginning July 2, teaching both beginners and experts about the sports of tennis or golf. Players of all skill levels are invited to participate in drills, skills competitions and games designed to improve their abilities while having loads of fun. All sessions will be held at the HNC campus with the possible opportunity to get out onto the tennis court or golf course one day each week, providing there are enough students enrolled. Both programs are designed to ensure a great time that will definitely put a smile on your child’s face!
Dance Camp
This camp is provided by ARCC Ballet & Dance of Chicago. The program will focus primarily on hip/hop style of dance (the most popular with the kids!) but the week will also include a mixture of jazz, tap, ballet and musical theater. Students will dance to current popular (screened for content) music selections from the top of the charts. This is a great program for your child to learn all the latest dances in a safe and friendly environment!
Cooking Camp
This program comes to us through the Kids’ Table, located on North Avenue in Chicago. Our young cooks will eat what they make, while creating something different each day. Some of the delicious dishes campers will create are pizza and American apple pie. Additionally, campers will taste-test fresh fruits and vegetables from the Farmers’ Market and have their own Farmers’ Market Feast. One day out of the week will be set aside for making ice cream sundaes to celebrate birthdays and holidays throughout the year. Bon appetit!
Karate Camp
This program is provided by Enso Chicago Studio on State Street. Campers will learn and advance at several different levels depending on what belt (color) they currently possess. White belt/ beginners are totally welcome! Campers will wear their karate uniforms, but if they are new to this sport and do not have one, they will have the option of purchasing one from the karate instructor. Any form of comfortable loose-fitting sports clothing is also acceptable. This genre of martial arts emphasizes the basic forms of self-protection and self-defense. This camp will also teach self- discipline and strength, while promoting the values of self- confidence and self-respect.
Band Camp
Join the band and learn to play an instrument while making music with your friends! Joining the FXW Jaguar Band means your child will be part of a group working towards common musical goals. Come meet Band Director Chad Smith and learn what this fun activity has to offer, both this summer and on into the next school year!
Chess Camp
This program is provided by Chess Wizards. Campers will each receive a chess board and a competition trophy as they learn the sport of chess and enhance their skills through array of game situations and activities. Learning strategies will include chess puzzles, one-to-one lessons, “wizard says” games and more. All campers will return home at the end of the week with their own learning materials to keep. In addition to achieving greater chess mastery, students in this program will gain added self-confidence, along with strategic planning and critical thinking skills.
Volleyball Camp for Girls
This camp is for girls who may be interested in — or are currently playing on — an FXW Jaguars Volleyball Team. All campers will improve their basic volleyball skills at all levels. Prior team experience is not necessary, since a portion of this camp is designed for “recruitment” to FXW team sports (whose formal practices begin on August 27). Team Volleyball for girls builds self-esteem and self-awareness, enhancing leadership skills and teamwork. The girls enjoy having fun and making new friends…or just reinforcing solid bonds with old ones.
Volleyball Camp for Boys
This camp is open to boys only who are interested in volleyball, with an eye towards creating a competitive Jaguar Boys Volleyball Team this fall and winter. Both the Camp and the proposed “Team” offer the possibility of a new sports experience for boys who enjoy team sports, but who may not wish to go out for Football or Basketball next year. We need just 6 “pioneers” to get this going!
“Take Five” Book Club (5th Grade Girls & Boys)
Read some great adventure books with your favorite teacher and some of your best friends this summer! This camp is for students who enjoy reading and talking about books, and who are entering the 5th grade in the upcoming school year. Both Book Club camp sessions will present a variety of reading choices for students, and students will have input into picking the books! So get a group of friends together and sign up!
“Boys Of Summer” Book Club (6th – 8th Grade)
This program is a book club for boys who want to get together and read – as well as create – “sports oriented’ fiction and non-fiction. Students will not only talk about what they read, but also delve into the world of Sportswriting Journalism, as they “cover” various breaking Chicago sports stories over the summer. As with all book clubs, getting a group of friends to sign up together is encouraged!
“Summer Girls” Book Club (6th – 8th Grade)
This program is a book club for girls who want to get together and talk about – as well as to write about – their particular literary interests. Reading and writing will center around the girls’ interests in Contemporary Fiction and Poetry, with special attention to the role of “The Imagination” in teen literature. As with the book clubs described above, gathering a group of friends and signing up together is a fun way to approach this camp!
